“Mobilizing Volunteers for Multiple Impact”

There is a growing “voluntourism” trend of people of all ages wanting to make a difference as part of their vacation voyages. Global Hope’s new Mobilization team is seeking to tie into this by offering short term team experiences that not only impact those who join but also help to build Global Hope’s development projects.

If you want to see this “voluntourism” trend for yourself:
try putting the word in google or view a great short “volunteer vacations” piece recently shown on
Good Morning America: See the Video by clicking here.
In 2007 teams were mobilized from Asia, Europe and the U.S. to bring help and hope in
such places as Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, North Africa, Bosnia, China and Kenya.

International team in Jordan

We’ve even seen teams combined from several continents, as was the case last summer in Jordan. 15 volunteers from Europe, US and Hong Kong came together to bring help and hope to Iraqi and other refugee families. In just 10 days the team was able to visit over 125 needy families and help over 1,000 people by offering food boxes, clothing, new shoes and socks and through emotional and spiritual support when asked for. They even had the joy of helping to open a new village through one of the trip’s many unplanned surprises:

The team had planned to visit and bring some practical help to a hospital
helping poor people with TB, but it was closed. Our Jordan director, Jamal Hashweh, saw a local boy with his bike and decided to have the group offer him some of the new shoes and socks. At first, the boy was a bit intimidated by our large tour bus. He eventually accepted. As he rode away full of joy, our bus driver was so moved by this act of compassion that he said “on the way back I am going to set it up so you can come and distribute shoes and socks to my whole village.” After a few calls, that is exactly what the team did. It was such a wonderful picture of blessings. We pulled our tour bus into his village (probably never visited by a tour bus before) and set up a large shoes and socks distribution “center” on the bus driver’s terrace. The families’ joy and smiles grabbed our hearts. Now, our local director has a whole new village to serve and take more teams back too.

Boy receiving new shoes!

Trips are being put together for 2008. You too can consider joining a short term
Mobilization trip and help make a difference during your vacation time.
See the GHNI website under “Get Involved” and then click “Volunteer” section
for the latest possibilities. As our Global Hope president says,
“we can’t do everything, but as people who care we can do something,
and the world can be changed one person at a time.”
